During long virtual conversations during the first confinement, Mohamed El Khatib invited the young actors and actresses of promotion 10 of the National Theater School of Brittany to confide in the relationships they have with their parents and the family heritage with which they will have to live.
My parents is the culmination of these exchanges, diverting the pitfalls of the drama school leaving show and parodying that of end-of-year school shows, by asking the question of the gaze, both tender and cruel, that children carry on their parents. Starting from the taboo question of the private life of parents, the young actresses and actors investigate the submerged part of the family iceberg. In this exploration of the parental love story, everything is allowed: confessions, imitations, childhood memories, wedding photos, telephone messages, accounts of romantic encounters...
Mohamed El Khatib seeks again and again in the sphere of intimacy. He masters the art of establishing authenticity on stage and orchestrates a perfectly refined theatrical and choral score. In mirror, the mosaic formed by these testimonies reflects a universal reality of the parent-child relationship, while a tender and nuanced portrait of a generation, that of the 1970s, is sketched in the background.
