Trained from his childhood in Arab-Andalusian music and traditional Maghreb dances, Filipe Lourenço has collaborated with many contemporary choreographers, from Charmatz to Rizzo, including Dubois, Appaix, Nasser Martin-Gousset and others.
In Gouâl (Extract), which he designed for six performers, he explores this singular heritage and confronts it with a more contemporary writing, all in sobriety and delicacy. L’alaoui, a war dance that can be found from northern Morocco to western Algeria, and initially reserved for men, opens up here to diversity. Carried by an ancestral pulse, male and female movements breathe new life into this practice and give it a flavor of today, deeply alive.
