Paris, late nineteenth century.

An artificial sky is built in the heart of the City of Light: the Grand Palace, a glass firmament, 200 meters long and 60 meters high. His only rival: the celestial vault.

Few people know that under this building, a hole, symmetrical underground dome of the Grand Palais, is dug at the same time.

France already had the largest tower in the world, and for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, she wanted to impress visitors once again. This narrow 700-meter well was supposed to lead small groups in an elevator to the deepest point of the Earth.

But during the construction, things get complicated. The project must be abandoned and the hole is sealed.

During a study for the renovation of the Grand Palais, a well was rediscovered. Archaeologists and engineers have begun a first exploration.

This summer, exclusively for the Paris Summer Festival, small groups will be admitted to the depths.

“Captain boomer is not a practical joker, nor is he a fool. But he is determinedly original and has a vague and modest idea of himself as a legendary figure.”

The Collective Captain Boomer was founded in 2008 and is based in Antwerp, Belgium. It is a group of artists and scientist that have done interventions in different European cities, bringing about a social dynamic and awakened sense of reality. The shows explore the boundaries between fiction and reality and are completely location based. Captain Boomer is deliberately sensational, setting a booby trap of meaning and challenging people to take a stand and engage with each other. Sometimes people think it is funny and we try not to disturb this comforting illusion.
